I've really missed the cheese tarts from Hokkaido and their flowy cheese when freshly baked. Unfortunately all the original stores in Singapore have closed down :,( It is fortunate however that a company from Malaysia has managed to recreate the taste using ingredients sourced locally, and now have stalls arounds Singapore as well! The salted egg flavour is my favourite, and it was really a pleasant surprise to chance upon the stall at Northpoint, Yishun!! Kazo is another bakery that is keeping the cheese tart trend strong, though they also sell other products and are famous for using ingredients sourced from Taiwan. I tried the original flavour of cheese tart and it was good too. For something even fancier, there is Queic by Olivia, located in the Outram area amongst all the 'hipster' cafes. It's a nice bright yellow cafe with the cheese tarts glistening in the showcase. The cheese is oozy in the middle and the baked pastry crust, perfect!
Many other eateries that I liked/tried 2 years ago closed down as well, most of them due to COVID. However, amidst my search for the 'best wanton mee', I think I've finally found one that I perceive to be the best cause every component (noodles, wanton, char siew) is extremely tasty and well prepared;- this is Laifabar Wanton Mee. I had originally tried it when it was promoted as part of hotel, but now there is a stand alone stall at Bukit Batok. They also package it really well for takeaway (via Grab).
In early Nov, there was also a food fair FUSE, at Marina Bay Sans featuring many local eateries. I finally got to try the famous Mother-in-Law egg tarts, and also a local bubble tea stall called No.17 which emerged during the pandemic. They have interesting flavours like lychee yakult with golden pearls.
My friends and I were also in search for kid/family friendly places to eat at, now that the group has 2 new kids :P We were lucky that Whisk & Paddle in Bukit Batok turned out to be such a place. It was rather spacious, with nice glass windows overlooking the park, and there was sufficient noise echo-ing around the place that restless kids would not really affect the conversations of others (and of course, they had baby chairs!). For Christmas it was also really nicely decorated with an attractive pink tree and santa clause lights.
I also FINALLY got to check out Madu Bakery, which is more easily accessible by bus than train, but it helped that it was open till 8pm so that I had time to check it out after work. I didn't get a chance to try the cereal prawn croissant which I really wanted to, but the nori truffle bun I got was good too and actually really really filling.
I'm also glad to notice that more and more cafes/eateries are becoming Halal certified, so we have more options to choose from for meals with our Muslim friends! One new discovery was Antoheetos, a Mexican joint with really nice takeaway lunch sets! I would definitely recommend it if you would like to try some Mexican food, and the sriracha chicken quesadillas I had were very delicious.
