I love discovering the history behind special buildings around Singapore. It's even more interesting how they are slowly being taken over by cafes I've come to really like;- and so while I get to enjoy the new flavours, I also get to appreciate the past as well. It also makes me wonder what flavours and experiences people say 50 years from now may have, especially in Singapore where food is such a big part of our lives...Would dining at such cafes still be a norm/something we enjoy doing on weekends? What flavour pairings/food trends would that generation have? What buildings would they think are "historic"?
Anyway, today I discovered the old red building that now houses an outlet of microBakery at Katong. It used to house other bakeries and shophouses. microBakery is one of my favourite bakeries and I usually visit the one at serene centre, but this outlet had this Biscoff flavour which I've never had before! Also, the vibe is different compared to the hole in wall, "hipster vibe" that the serene centre outlet has...this outlet housed in a shophouse has a nostalgic feel.
Last month I also finally got to visit the old Khong Guan biscuit building that I had been meaning to, that now houses Alchemist coffee. The exterior still has the original architecture with bright blue shutters and tiles at the corner of the street, while the interior is so pretty with light bulbs and thin gold plates hanging from the high ceiling. The coffee is really good too!
