Recently i attended an exhibition and learnt how NHB is using new technology to capture the essence of old shophouses and share this with the general public. The virtual tour of shophouses explains the evolution of the architecture of shophouses in Singapore with time! It was really nice to see some of these shophouses in person during my Balestier trail where "art deco" shop houses are still conserved. The shophouses in Balestier were built between 1920-1950s and it's really heartwarming to know they have been preserved as part of Singapore's history for future generations and even for tourists who visit Singapore, instead of them just viewing Singapore as a bustling city of skyscrapers.
Along the way, the trail took me to the Whampoa market which is still in existence today, and also where the famous Hoover Rojak stall was located so I had to get some. There was already a queue in the morning around 10+am, so you could tell it was well patronized amongst all the stalls there.
The trail also lead me through Mandalay road in Singapore where the old Tan Tock Seng hospital was located, a rich part of Singapore's medical and healthcare history and development. I finally ended off at Novena MRT, also where the mall in located and I was lucky to chance upon a food fair going on this weekend and pick up some very pretty madeleines from Vanda Patisserie. They were bite size, not too sweet, and there were interesting flavours like kitkat mint or popcorn which made a nice gift as well.
