Taste of Europe (Supermarket ed.) #Munich

Updated: Jul 3, 2021

Lidl recently had a promotional counter on Greek foods so I decided to buy some items to try! That then inspired me to start this post as I realised that by being in Germany, I have been getting access to many interesting ingredients from around Europe at the supermarket : ) (other than Lidl, supermarkets include Edeka and Aldi)

  1. Greek white giant beans in tomato sauce (and other baked casseroles) Apparently in Greece, these beans can be eaten as an entrée or as a main served with bread. I had the beans as a side dish and it tasted abit like baked beans but more flavourful and less sweet.

  2. Italian pasta and coffee I really liked this brand of pasta that I discovered because the fusilli when cooked has a slightly firm texture to it. Also, as I have a nespresso machine, it was nice that Lavazza has compatible capsules to make good coffee at home!

  3. Norwegian seafood Alot of seafood such as salmon and prawns are sourced from Norway (& the Scandinavian region) and prepacked into small ready to eat quantities at the supermarket! They are perfect for pastas and other simple home dishes including sandwiches.

  4. Irish beer & French wine Oktoberfest is being cancelled for the 2nd time in a row because of COVID, but the supermarkets are filled with interesting beers to try. Most of them are from Germany but discovered one brewed in Ireland! It's also nice to pair some foods with wine sometimes...though being a student, I went for the "cheapest vintage wine" >< JP Chenet is known for it's curved shaped bottles so an interesting piece of history there! :P

  5. Spanish fruit Many seasonal fruit are actually sourced from Spain! Like apricots, blueberries etc. This was just my observation at the supermarket, but it is in fact true (Read more: Ministry of Foreign Affairs. ) These apricots were really sweet : ) And the blueberries are bigger than the ones I was used to seeing (sold in Singapore imported from USA)...and they come in TUBS! :P

Not sure when it would be safe to travel freely again despite EU's talks of the "vaccine passport" , but till then it's nice to have a little adventure this way~

The next 2 items are from a fancier "Delikatessen" called Garibaldi. They have a very wide range of wines, and other products like pasta, oils, spreads etc mainly from Italy but also from other places in Europe.

7. Italian Tomato sauce Really nice rich tomato sauce for making pasta!

8. Spanish Chips TRUFFLE!!!! ><
