I've been able to improve my vocabulary and also try some uniquely German foods by visiting the supermarket to pick up some ingredients to prepare my own meals :P
Many fruits and vegetables grown in Europe and which are seasonal are sold in large quantities during certain periods, and its more economical if you look out for those! They specially label then "Gut & Gunstig".
There are also so many types of "Brot"= bread, and my sister recommended I try pumpernickel. It's a slightly dense but very soft bread that makes a good sandwich!
Unlike back home, milk, yoghurts and cheeses are native to this region, so there are huge sections at the supermarkets labelled "Kase" and "Milch" with so many varieties for me to choose from! The milks are even labelled with the % fat in them! eg. 1.5 or 3.5 % >< I've come to really like Bergkase cheese which is a kind of hard mountain cheese, and tastes good on its own as a snack. Also, the J is pronounced at Y in German as in "Joghurt".
With milk, there are cereals! :P I honestly had no idea which one to choose so I picked the one that was on sale that week, only to realise that it was actually a brand with historical value! Kolln has actually been around for 200 years and started off as an oat mill. I really like their interesting flavours of granola/muesli including their anniversary special that has chai and white chocolate~
Of course, no experience to Germany is complete without sausages, schnitzel and beer. It has been abit difficult to travel out for pub meals due to the lockdown, but this was an attempt at re-creating such a meal at home :P Riegele craft beers are really interesting, and there is an interesting name and flavour profile with every bottle. I decided to go for something lighter like no. 3.
Kuemmerling was actually something I discovered while watching Korean Englishman :P It's a kind of herbal liquor and can easily be bought near the checkout counter at supermarkets.
Lastly, of course there are snacks! Like chips and chocolate :P I was truly amazed at how the "Kartoffelsnack"= potatosnack were really shaped liked bears! Rittersport is something quite familiar to many, but there are new and interesting flavours being released every now and then like "Honig-salz-mandel"= honey, salt, almond! I admit, my favourite snack has to be Knoppers. I had never tasted them before coming to Munich, but I really like the hazelnut chocolate and marshmallow-y like cream sandwiched by the biscuit wafer.
