Salzburg is just on the border of Germany and Austria, and very famously known for its association with Mozart. When my sister visited she really wanted to make a day trip down, and this can easily be done using the DB Bayern ticket (ie, travelling on regional trains) as well!

Our first stop was a cafe I found Cafe Bazar, which is historically known for being a meeting point of poets and artists. It overlooks the river bank and serves really delicious Austrian dishes as well as cakes! Everyone is attracted by this glass casing housing the slice cakes and it is quite an experience watching the waitresses keep coming over to pick up cakes for customers;- so you better order your favourite quickly before the last slice is snatched up! >< We had the classic semolina dumplings and schinkenfleckerl (baked ham and cheese pasta).
The city itself is quite easy to navigate on foot and is very reminiscent of Passau which I had visited previously, with astronomical clocks on buildings, unique architecture with rather pastel colours, and of course everything to do with Mozart scattered about the city :P The most famous is FÜrst Confiserie which is the "original" store making the Mozart kugel that can be found worldwide now!
The oldest bakery Stiftsbäckerei St Peter is also worth visiting, cause the bread is still baked in the wood fire oven from the past, and just outside is a mill-wheel that was used to produce electricity in the past and you can still see it in operation! (Which I find pretty cool instead of just the huge structures I had seen in the Deutsches Museum which was already quite impressive;- that such technology was invented in the past to solve the needs of the time).
And of course, me being me, would look out for 'hipster coffee places' :P and perhaps that adds to the charm of Salzsburg where old meets new and you can sip a really good cup of coffee (think even flat whites!) at Kaffee Alchemie while overlooking Mozartsteg which was featured in the Sound of Music!
It is a beautiful city, and the gardens at Mirabell Palace is so well taken cared of and filled with flowers with deep brilliant colours, it's as if some little fairies do so! It was definitely worth the journey despite the rain.
