Missing Asian Food #Munich

Updated: Jul 24, 2022

I was craving sushi and discovered Sano Sushi online, which is a family business that has been in Munich since 1996. I was really happy that I found this place because the sushi was delicious and affordable. Due to COVID you have to order the sushi and come back around 15-20min after to pick it up. It gave me the chance to explore the Sendlinger Tor area, which seems to be the old town of Munich.

There were many pretty pastel coloured buildings with biblical or literature related motifs, and artisan stores focusing on watch making/repair, bicycle upgrades, ring design just to name a few. It was an interesting experience just walking around the area.

Spring has also arrived in Munich! and all the beautiful flowers kind of remind me of Korea, especially Jeju : ) (i actually took a very similar looking photo of cherry blossoms some years ago). Anyway I discovered Hansik, which serves tasty typical korean dishes like bibimpap, spicy seafood soup, japchae, kimbap just to name a few. The surrounding areas of Hansik also has many historical building/structures, like Isartor (another one of the remaining gothic gates), the government office building Regierung von Oberbayern, and if you keep walking down the karl-scharnagl-ring, you will hit the gardens which houses the Munich Residenz. Walking through the gardens will also take you to Odeonsplatz which has more beautiful buildings in the historical market place~ Apparently cafe Tambosi is the oldest cafe in Munich, which even Mozart used to frequent! I was lucky to hear some outdoor musicians play Mamma Mia as I walked past : )

Lastly, I also got a chance to try bubbletea in Munich! I didn't expect to be able to find that here, and it was in fact popular amongst the locals as well (there was a queue when I went). This outlet was located near the university area, just a short walking distance from Universität station. The St Ludwig Church and Bavaria Bibilotek=library are in the area with really beautiful/historical architecture. The church is noteworthy because it has the 2nd largest altar fresco in the world! (if you click the link you can view it on 360)

Update: I also tried Chi Thu which has an outlet in the Sendlinger Tor area. They serve authentic Vietnamese street food like Pho, Banh Mi, Baos, Rice paper rolls etc :) The Bao was really filling and dipping sauce for the rolls was really flavourful.

LeDu Dumplings is a Chinese dim sum store specializing in dumplings, and there is an outlet a short walk from the Universität station. I tried their LeDu special (pork & bamboo shoots) and the black&white (pork & shitake mushrooms). They were both really really good, and reminded me of xiao long baos and just the taste of home : ) The man taking everyone's order that day was such a nice person and he would patiently explain the menu to each customer. While you wait for your order outside (due to COVID) he would also make sure you have a chair to sit while waiting. It was a really pleasant experience and would definitely recommend this place to anyone looking for Asian food in Munich : )
